Nació
en la localidad francesa de La Ciocart, en 1929, y fue vendedor de
lámparas hasta que se jubiló con 65 años. Gana entonces un
concurso de fotografía y es invitado a seguir un curso en Arles con
Pascal Dolémieux, con quien aprende los trucos del nuevo oficio.
He was born in the French village of La Ciotat, in 1929, and worked as a lamp seller till he retired at the age of 65. After winning a photo contest was rewarded with a trainee in photography by Pascal Dolémieux, from whom he will learn the tricks of the new craft.
"Realizo apuntes y dibujos de lo que quiero hacer, pero como soy un mal dibujante termino preparando una fotografía. Una vez tengo la idea, creo el escenario, los elementos mínimos. Después, en la terraza de nuestra casa de Marsella, una zona tranquila donde nadie nos ve, nos fotografiamos (él y su mujer) en la postura que debemos tener. Recorto las siluetas de esas fotografías, sustituyo mi cabeza por la del personaje, y la pego sobre la foto del decorado."
"I make scketches and drawings about what I want to get, but as I'm a bad draughtsman I always end up setting up a picture. Once I have the idea, I make up the stage, the minimal elements. Afterwards, on our house's terrace in Marsella, a quiet spot where nobody see us, we take pictures of ourselves (he and his wife) standing in the posture we must have later. Then I cut those pictures out, swap the character's head and mine, and paste the result on the set."
El rostro de su protagonista es el suyo a los 66 años, cuando se fotografió en distintas posturas y expresiones, desde diferentes posiciones, creando una base de datos de la que se sirve desde entonces.
His main character's face is his own when he was 66 years old, then he took pictures of himself showing different body gestures, developing thus a database from which he uses ever since.
